Project description

In the last years, the attractiveness of science and engineering studies to young people is persistently on the decline, which we recognize as a serious threat for the future. In the long term, the lack of graduates in science and engineering affects economic development of the Visegrad countries and reduces their competitiveness. Therefore, our project is designed to show the young people that these disciplines are essential to quality of life and have enormous potential for the future. As part of a project co-financed by the International Visegrad Fund we want to organize the international workshop named “Silesian cross-border Workshop of Applied Physics (SWAP)“.

It will be organized by the Department of Physics of VŠB – Technical University of Ostrava. The purpose of the international workshop is to enable PhD eventually master students, young researchers from the V4 countries, to share their excellent results of research and development in applied physics and the related fields (e.g. nanotechnology, magneto-optics, ellipsometry, thin-film optics, nuclear physics, fluid jet, etc.). The co-initiator of the event is also company ON Semiconductor, a leading supplier of semiconductor-based solutions, deeply interested in the future of science and technology in the region.
The workshop program will include guided tours to research laboratories of the Department of Physics of VŠB – Technical University of Ostrava (such as the Laboratory of Magnetooptics, the Laboratory of Spectroscopic Ellipsometry, etc.), and the University of Silesia in Katowice (Magnetic research laboratory, Transmission electron microscopy laboratory, etc.) and a visit to planetarium of Ostrava. The integral part of the workshop will be a field trip to two companies – ON Semiconductor and Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Czech – applying the latest results of scientific research in practice. The participants will see their laboratories and technical facilities.

The workshop will provide an opportunity for further discussion and sharing the experience and will establish the basis for future cooperation with new partners. In a society based on knowledge and innovation there is a strong emphasis on cooperation of universities, research and development centres and the application sphere. The participants of the project will get a unique opportunity of learning the most interesting results of applied research in two progressive companies that are located in the Czech-Polish cross-border region. The outcome of SWAP will be the exchange of experience, knowledge and practical skills in research and education between the participating partner institutions from the Visegrad countries.
